Paraffin heaters have several main uses and are relied upon all over the world – Japan, the US, the UK, South Africa and Australia are all key regions for use.

Portable Heating

In the United Kingdom and the United States, paraffin heaters are incredibly popular as greenhouse heat sources. Their portability and the cheapness of the fuel supply makes them an attractive option for cold periods, particularly as they don’t require a gas or electricity supply to be used.

There are several specialist paraffin heating greenhouse products, such as the cold-frame heater. Many gardeners also use these heaters as a means of reducing frost damage – even if the heat output is not significant, providing the temperature within the greenhouse stays above zero there should be minimal losses.

Home Heating

Some countries rely on paraffin heaters as home heating devices – Japan is one of the major regions that use them in this way. For home owners concerned about the scent of paraffin, many companies now produce a paraffin deodorizer additive which can reduce the unsavoury scent of the oil.

It must be pointed out that paraffin heaters are great for back-up supply in case the main means of heating is cut (electricity or gas supply failures), but if you are planning to use them as your main heating source you will need to ensure you follow the safety precautions contained in the instruction booklet you receive with the heater.
